Back in Business

Go Admirals!  RAA is back in business!  As many of you know, about a year ago I received a government scholarship to work on my Master’s Degree in International Affairs at Tufts University in Boston, MA.  Finally, last March, I graduated from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.  Now that all of that is out of the way, I’m looking forward to getting this newsletter out to you or a more regular basis.

While I was out, I had a chance to read through the many emails you all have sent regarding whether or not we should make RAA a nonprofit organization.  While good arguments were made for and against, more people felt that going nonprofit at this time would not be a good idea.  The reasons were many, but they seem to circle around concerns about the level of participation needed to create, fund and maintain a nonprofit organization.  Also, judging from the number of responses compared to the number of people on our list, I received the impression that most of you may not have had too strong of an opinion either way--that RAA was just a great tool for reuniting fellow Admirals and for finding out what’s going on in a tiny town from which we share common memories.  However, if sufficient interest generates, we can always revisit this in the future.

Speaking of memories, summer is season for reunions and many of the various class years start announcing mini-reunions, get-togethers, and BBQs.  I you have one scheduled or plan to shortly, drop us an email at DGFRota1983@yahoo.com.  We’ll get it out to the mailing list so that you can get maximum participation.  We’ve received one already that, I’m sure, will be of interest to the majority of you (see below).

Many of you have been asking about getting an RAA Email Directory of all of the folks registered at the RAA site.  John Overall and I are trying to work on that now and I hope to have this capability available on our website shortly.  In the interim, make sure that you have registered at our website (www.rotaadmirals.com).  Although the Yahoo! discussion group still exists, our primary site for the latest information aforementioned website.

Someone send me some photos out there!  We’d love to see what you look like theses days.  Email them in along with a little bit about yourself and we’ll publish them in the newsletter.

All for now!  It’s great to be back and I look forward to your comments and feedback.

Go Admirals!

Shawn Costley

P.S.  We will be cleaning out the “Rota’s Most Wanted” section after this issue.  If you wish to continue to have your search listed, please send me an email at DGFRota1983@yahoo.com

COACH WEST’S BIRTHDAY AND ROTA REUNION

If you were in Rota anytime before the 90’s, you should remember Coach West.  He was pretty much a DGF icon:  Football coach, teacher, and all-around great guy.  His son Allen has announced a July 9, 2005 Birthday and Reunion at Coach West’s lakefront property in Waco, Texas.  “Blaze” West will be 81 years old!

Quite a few people have responded.  Here’s the latest from Denye Tzantarmas (1978-1980):

I thought most of you would want the details for the Birthday Bash for Coach Les West/Rota Reunion in Waco Texas on July 9th.

I've been in contact with Allen (his oldest son) and this is what the weekend looks like!  We will be joined by some of the Guantanamo Bay alumni.  Man that Blaze gets around!

Friday, July 8, 2005

Meet and Greet in the early evening in the "square" downtown Waco. It's the renovated warehouse district.

The square is the place to be in Waco and you won't be able to miss it.  Very close to the hotels and restaurants, shopping and river walk.  After that, on Friday evening  we will all head to a place called "Crickets Draft house"

(a huge place for us to get some drinks and visit some more.)

Saturday, July 9th, 2005  (Birthday Bash/Reunion Day)

Coach West has rented the VFW in Hewitt (just down the road from Waco) for the Big Birthday Bash/Reunion!!

We have the VFW post 6008 from 11 am - 12 pm.  The West's considered the heat in Texas  for that time of the year

and decided not to do it at their property.

VFW Post 6008 is located at:  725 Sun Valley Blvd, Hewitt Texas 76643

Phone:  254-666-6008

Sunday, July 10th, 2005

We will meet in small groups with friends for breakfast or brunch somewhere downtown..... and then depart.

Here's a link to hotels in Wacohttp://www.wacocvb.com/waco-hotels.html

Many are staying at the Hilton and Marriott Courtyard and surrounding downtown hotels.

Here is Allen West's contact info:  254-662-3583  or coachawest@yahoo.com

Please give him a heads up, if you plan on attending so he can be prepared.

Hope to see you all there!
